I was hoping someone might give me a hand trying to decide what weapons to take along with me while I'm out diving.
I know the spear, trident, and even dagger are pretty good. Just about anything that's just piercing works great... but what about Halberd or Scythe? Both are piercing/slashing weapons so how would the underwater system treat them for penalties? Am I limited underwater to mostly simple weapons? I kind of want to use a halberd but I don't want to take a penalty underwater with one because it is also considered a slashing weapon. I'll just use a spear if that's the case.
Also... what about ranged combat options? Obviously the bow is a poor choice... but what about throwing weapons? Those critters underwater can throw axes with impunity... what about PC's?

Well, you can always buy a non-magic one and try it without losing too much gold.
To give you a hint, I chose not enable the bulkier and less aerodynamic weapons for underwater combat. Even if some of them are technically partially piercing weapons, it seems like it would be entirely too hard to use them against the force of the water.
There are a number of non-simple weapons that work underwater as well. Short sword & rapier require rogue or martial proficiency & sai requires exotic proficiency.
Critters are subject to the same penalties underwater as PCs & throwing weapons have an even larger penalty than bows/crossbows. I was first inclined to not allow throwing weapons underwater at all ... but wanted to encourage diversity of weapon choice.
Overall ranged weapons are still worth using underwater in many cases despite the penalties. My ranged focused character doesn't prefer to adventure underwater, but she still can help with supporting fire. A character that isn't dextrous/focused on ranged weapons might have a significant amount of trouble hitting enemies though.

Tridents are Martial too. Not Simple. Like Lucky said, it's mostly the smaller weapons with thrusting attacks; having the Piercing damage type doesn't necessarily mean that the weapon will work underwater without penalty. The sai is a Bludgeoning weapon, but it works underwater. And the picks are Piercing weapons, but they don't work so well underwater, which makes sense; you swing a pick rather than thrust with it. And if any ranged weapon shouldn't work at all underwater, it's the sling. Can you imagine actually trying to use a weapon like that underwater? o.o (And really, those koalinths may throw axes underwater, but they pretty well suck at it. Just stand there and let a pack of koalinths chuck axes at you for a minute or so. Assuming that your Armor Class isn't anywhere near 10, just see how many times they miss. )
