easydamus.com/alignment.htmlI would also recommend this site to ALL players of NWN / D&D regardless of experience. It even breaks down 10 signs of weakness / code of conduct for each alignment, how each alignment acts in society, how they interact with other alignments, and the general philosophy. I generally refer to this site whenever I create a new character. I believe the text provided on Wiki is quoted from same material as first paragraph of each alignments description from this site.

It is worth mentioning that people too often fall to stereotypes when it comes to roleplaying certain Alignments. Superman, Robocop and Forrest Gump are three distinctly different characters with three distinctly different personalities, yet all three would most likely qualify for the Lawful Good alignment. On the other end of the 3-square we have Chaotic Evil, an Alignment which, thanks to Chaotic Evil creatures such as orcs, is plagued by the stereotype that Chaotic Evil characters must be frothing with madness and destroying everything in sight...not anyone you would expect to be a team player. But Chaotic Evil is so much more than that; given the guidelines for both Chaos and Evil, it's an ideal Alignment for subtle characters played more along the lines of Deception Incarnate, especially if the character has high Wisdom, high Charisma, some ranks in Bluff and/or some ranks in Persuade. So certain types of Chaotic characters, Evil characters and Chaotic Evil characters do indeed play well enough with others; it all depends on the character's personality (and maybe certain relevant Abilities and Skills). Good, Evil, Law and Chaos...each of those aspects comes in a broad spectrum of types and degrees. Of course, the core of Good is selflessness, and the core of Evil is selfishness. So you still probably can't trust the Chaotic Evil character to guard the pack mules while you and the rest of the party descend into the dungeon...and if you do trust him, it's probably because he duped you into thinking he was some kind of Lawful Good.

During my PnP games and here recently on NwN, i been using a set of 10 questions, that you (the player) ask about your PC. The alignment system better suits the RIFT system, but with a bit on imagination, you can easily adapt.
at the very least you can have a grounds and basis of your PC's personality.
Questions 1. Do you: A. Always keep your word of honor? B. Keep your word of honor to other good people, but not necessarily bad people? C. Keep your word of honor & have a high regard for life and freedom? D. May or may not keep your word of honor? E. Not necessarily keep your word of honor to anyone? F. Rarely keep your word of honor (You have no honor)?
2. Do you: A. Avoid lying? B. Lie only to selfish or evil people? C. Lie & cheat if necessary (especially to anarchist or evil people)? D. Lie & cheat if you feel it's necessary? E. Lie & cheat to anyone; good or evil? F. Lie to & cheat those not worthy of your respect? G. Lie & cheat to anyone?
3. Will you: A. Never kill or attack unarmed foes? B. Not kill unarmed foes (But you will take advantage of one)? C. Not likely kill an unarmed foe, but certainly knockout, attack, or beat up one? D. Most definitely attack an unarmed foe (because those are the best kind). Yet kill an unarmed foe as readily as he would a potential threat or competitor? E. Might or might not kill an unarmed foe? F. Most certainly attack & kill an unarmed foe?
4. Do you: A. Never harm innocents? B. Never kill innocents (but might harm or kidnap them)? C. Use or harm innocents? D. Not kill innocents, particularly children (but may harm, kidnap all but children) E. Use, hurt and kill an innocent without a second thought or for pleasure?
5. Do you: A. Never torture for any reason? B. Never torture for pleasure, but may use muscle to extract information from criminals or evil people? C. Not use torture unless absolutely necessary? D. Use torture to extract information (Not likely for pleasure)? E. Use torture for extracting information & pleasure? F. Never torture for pleasure, or resort to inhumane treatment of prisoners, but torture, although distasteful, is a necessary means of extracting information? G. Use torture for pleasure & information?
6. Will you: A. Never kill for pleasure? B. Never kill for pleasure (but will always attempt to bring the villain to justice alive no matter how vile he may be)? C. Seldom kill for pleasure? D. Possibly kill for sheer pleasure? E. Kill for sheer pleasure?
7. Will you: A. Always help others? B. Help those in need most of the time? C. Not likely help someone without some ulterior motive (even if it's only to show-off)? D. Feel no compulsion to help without some sort of tangible reward? E. Possibly or possibly not help someone in need? F. Most likely help someone only to kill or rob them?
8. Do you: A. Work well in a group? B. Work with groups, but dislike confining laws and bureaucracy (red tape)? C. Work with groups, especially if profitable? D. Not work well in groups (you are cocky & loudmouthed who is likely to do as you damn well please)? E. Work with others if it will help you obtain your personal goals? F. Work with others to obtain your goals? G. Not work well within groups (consistently disregarding orders to do as you please) & associate mostly with evil people?
9. Do you: A. Respect authority, law, self-discipline and honor. Also never break the law unless conditions are desperate. (This means no breaking & entry, theft, torture, unprovoked assaults, etc.)? B. Attempt to work within the law whenever possible. But tend to bend & occasionally break the law when deemed necessary. Yet distrust authority. (This means you might strong-arm, harass, break & enter, theft & so on.)? C. Dislike authority? D. Have little respect for self discipline or authority? E. Have no deference to laws or authority, but will work within the law if you must? F. Respect and honor self-discipline? G. Despise honor, authority, & self-discipline?
10. Will you: A. Never betray a friend? B. Possibly betray a friend? C. Betray a friend if it serves your needs? D. Betray friends (after all, you can always find new friends)?
Point Key: A=1 point B=2 point C=3 point D=4 point E=5 point F=6 point G=7 point
Alignment scale: • Principled =10 • Scrupulous = 16 • Unprincipled = 22 • Anarchist = 33 • Aberrant = 41 • Miscreant = 43 • Diabolic = 60
translating the RIFT alignment to any DnD alignment that fits the answers to your questions
usually Principled is LG, Diabolic is CE, RIFT strongly disapproves of TN claiming that no sentient being can truly have no motivations, but DnD's alignment of TN isn't the same as their claim,.. but in the end you should be the final judge of your character's alignment as long as it falls within reasonable parameters.
